Sumidero Canyon photos by Don and Lois Porter 2/22/2002 |
The Sumidero Canyon, near Chiapa de Corzo, is one of the most amazing natural features of Chiapas. The canyon was formed by a geological fault shift. Only later did the river change course to run through the canyon. And the dam that made it possible to navigate the canyon was only built in the 1980s. We took a boat ride up the canyon to the dam, and later drove up to the lookout points on the canyon rim.
