Kodak Learning Center monitors Here's a quick overview of monitor quality issues
Tom's Hardware monitor article Here's a recent (Nov 2001) article detailing the technical aspects of selecting a monitor. The author is considering more general use, so doesn’t take specific requirements for photography into account. Nevertheless, there is a lot of excellent information here:

Digital Images (week 3)

Basics
Kodak Book 3 Kodak Learning Center: All of "Book 3" contains useful information about the basics of digital imaging. Just take the Kodak proprietary orientation with a grain of salt.

Resolution

Understanding Resolution Essay by Michael Reichmann
Resolving Resolution (PDF) Chapter 14 ("Resolving the Resolution Issue") of Dan Margulis' book "Professional Photoshop 6"-- idiosyncratic, but very perceptive and helpful in sorting out the confusion about what DPI means.

Halftone Resolution issue (PDF, in Stuffit format)

Brian Lawler's handout (a stuffed PDF: must Unstuff and view with Acrobat Reader) explaining the relation between scanner resolution (dpi) and half-tone printing requirements (lpi).
Library image preservation perspective
Stanford Library digital imaging links Comprehensive and well-annotated listing of sources on digital imaging as applied for library preservation purposes -- good companion to the Cornell tutorial.
Preservation Tutorial A digital imaging tutorial from the Library at Cornell University. Very much oriented toward the use of digital imaging to convert and make accessible cultural heritage materials, as you would expect from a library. However, it does contain lots of useful basic material about the technology itself (e.g. illustrations of basic terminology).

The New York Institute of Photography has these useful lessons on scanners, but be aware that the details are a year or two out of date. So for example, when they talk about 300dpi versus 600dpi scanners, you should be thinking about 1600dpi or more for flatbeds, and at least 2400dpi for film. Still, the concepts are sound and well illustrated.
The skinny on scanner color Bruce Fraser article on approaches to getting accurate color from scanners.

Sharpening in Photoshop

A Two-Pass Approach to Sharpening in Photoshop

Several step by step suggestions from Bruce Fraser - much like portions of Real World Photoshop.
MTF Tutorials Series of very detailed and very technical discussions by Norman Koren, an engineer who can and does go into considerable mathematical detail about what sharpness really is (the current measure is called Modulation Transfer Function, but be aware that you'll need to understand convolutions and Fourier Transforms as well as the Nyquist Sampling Theorem to make much sense of this). Nevertheless, this is a fascinating series of pages which can give good insight into all the components involved in producing a satisfyingly sharp final print (even if you skip over the equations and graphs).
